On today’s episode Sarah chats with Olivia Scobie.
Olivia has her Master’s in social work and specializes in helping moms and families deepen their resiliency and navigate the most challenging aspects of parenting.
On this episode they dive into the top signs of “mom burnout” and the six things you can do to help avoid getting burned out in the first place.
This episode should be required listening for all new Moms and especially poignant during the pandemic where we are all finding ourselves in new and unexpected situations.
What is Mom Burnout?
There are many signs of Mom burnout, but a few of the key ones include:
– extended exhaustion
– questioning your parenting ability
– constantly bickering with your partner
– worrying you’re a bad parent
– neglecting your own needs
– neglecting your child’s needs
– experiencing violent urges or manic episodes
Olivia’s Tips For Avoiding Mom Burnout
1) Make self-care a family affair. Everyone gets time to do what they need to recharge.
2) Have enough help. Whether that’s emotional support or physical support. Ask for help where you need it.
3) Manage Stress. This goes with number 1. You have to find the thing that works for you to both keep stressors at bay, and de-stress when you can’t keep them at bay.
4) Be ready for baby. Prepare your home and your relationship for a baby so you aren’t adding more to your plate in early postpartum.
5) Keep expectations realistic. You aren’t going to do everything right all the time. Heck you might not even get it right 50% of the time. That’s okay. Do what works for you and your family.
6) Connect with your community/tribe. Knowing where you can go to get good advice, trusted advice, and that people who really understand and what you’re going through (The Juna Moms Facebook Group is great for this – link in profile).
